Solastalgia
Solastalgia is a collection exploring the deep interconnection between animals, humans, and the wild places we share. Through imagery of animals intertwined with abstract biological symbols, the work reflects on the invisible threads that link all living beings. Beneath fur, skin, and feathers, we are composed of the same elemental building blocks — a reminder that life on Earth is made from the same essential matter.
At the core of this collection is CHNOPS: carbon (C), hydrogen (H), nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) — the six fundamental elements that form the molecules of life. These atoms form the DNA, proteins, and cells that connect every organism on Earth. From the breath of a whale to the blood in our veins, these elements flow through all living things, cycling endlessly through ecosystems and time.
The word solastalgia, coined by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht, captures the ache of environmental loss — the homesickness we feel while still at home, as familiar landscapes transform or disappear. This body of work responds to that feeling — a quiet mourning for the loss of wildness, and a call to remember that the fate of animals and ecosystems is intimately tied to our own.
